Extra Credit Blog: Gatsby's backstory

Gatsby goes out to war, and fights in WWI, a reason why the modernist era started. During the war, Gatsby witnesses things that he has never seen before in his life, and completely changes his viewpoint on life. In the war, Gatsby witnessed a lot of disturbing events. He saw soldiers who were clearly afraid but still gave their lives for the nation. There was constant noise from weapons, tanks, and explosions which made the battlefield a place of nightmare. Gatsby also had to cope with the loss of his friends, and a fellow soldier who died made him realize just how fragile life can be. After the war is over he goes back to NYC hoping to reunite with the love of his life, Daisy. But she is nowhere to be found. He heard from her parents that she was already married, which leaves Gatsby heartbroken. Daisy waited a long time for Gatsby to return from war. But her dreams in life were being held back because of Gatsby, so she didn’t have any choice but to marry Tom. Trying to move on he...

How Gatsby is different to everyone else.

Gatsby, a very wealthy individual, wealth was earned by himself and not inherit like the other characters. This already sets him aside from all the different characters in the story. His wealth came from his love for Daisy but more importantly, his immense interest in money which led him to work hard for his money. All the other characters have money because of something that runs down in their family, which is not representative of the person themselves as they did not inherit it themselves. We can already see this in Daisy's personality as she has money on her side and doesn't really need to worry about the consequences of her actions and the same can be said for Tom Buchanan, Daisy's husband. Gatsby's only major use of his wealth was to get Daisy's attention and thought that he could take care of her better because of his new status. Daisy starts loving Gatsby again which proves the point of her not caring about what happens. At the party, where there was an awkw...

Modernism and its effect on Literature and Society

Modernism is a change in society that was influenced by the effects of World War I. It was a time period from the 1900s to 1940s when society and everything consisting of it changed. In English literature, stories were told in an incomplete, choppy, or fragmented way which represents the shape of society after World War I. And this style of writing would change English literature forever. Before modernism, stories were written in a very concrete and straightforward but after the concept of abstract writing came into view. This was around the time when the United States saw an industrial boom and many machines that made things in life easier or quality-of-life inventions were starting to get made. This period was also the introduction of the Jazz Age which became popular after WWI as well. Modernism was also when the space for art changed and poets and writers were able to take advantage of this. There were also advances in education which made them more important than ever before. One ...

purpose of the mole

Image
Since atoms are very small and very difficult to individually measure, we use mass to estimate the number of atoms and vice versa. To help with this, a measurement called the  mole  is used to help count atoms. With the use of the mass spectrometer, the number, 6.022 x 10^23 was found to be the most sufficient for chemistry purposes. The number got its name,  Avogadro's Number,  after his countless achievements and discoveries within chemistry. One mole of something is equal to 6.022x10^23 amount of that item, or 6.022 hexillion. Since atoms are very small, a bulk amount of them, in this case, a mole, is used to measure a sample of atoms. Like a couple of bottles is 2 bottles, and a mole of bottles is 6.022 hexillion bottles. Even on the periodic table of elements, there exists something called a molar mass, which is the mass of a mole rather than just a single atom so atoms can be measured as a sample and not individually. 6.022 hexillion is a very large numbe...
