How Gatsby is different to everyone else.
Gatsby, a very wealthy individual, wealth was earned by himself and not inherit like the other characters. This already sets him aside from all the different characters in the story. His wealth came from his love for Daisy but more importantly, his immense interest in money which led him to work hard for his money. All the other characters have money because of something that runs down in their family, which is not representative of the person themselves as they did not inherit it themselves. We can already see this in Daisy's personality as she has money on her side and doesn't really need to worry about the consequences of her actions and the same can be said for Tom Buchanan, Daisy's husband. Gatsby's only major use of his wealth was to get Daisy's attention and thought that he could take care of her better because of his new status. Daisy starts loving Gatsby again which proves the point of her not caring about what happens. At the party, where there was an awkward and uneasy atmosphere, the agitated nature of each of the characters was apparent except for Gatsby's. This is another emotion created by his wealth, which makes him happy and humble compared to the rest where wealth is a major part of their life but they take it for granted. And the main reason for Gatsby's attitude is his love for Daisy, and how bad he must've felt when she married Tom, but Tom is going through the same issue where Daisy has left him for Gatsby. But Daisy probably didn't think twice before leaving Gatsby or Tom because she makes decisions that best impact her life at that specific moment. Love and Wealth is a recurring "theme" in the story as that's what the story and the character's decision are most based upon.
I like how you chose a single character and analyzed him and compared him to the other characters in the book; it slightly changed my perspective on the book.
ReplyDeleteI like how you analyzed one character and compared them with the other characters in the story with conflicting backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteThaneshwar, I agree with you. I also think that Gatsby is the only morally pure character in the book other than Nick. Everyone does something but I think the only thing Gatsby did wrong was to love Daisy. I also like you compared him to other characters and how described what everyone else did was negative but Gatsby didnt do anything that bad
